Visits to Bhimashankar, Lenyadri and Ozar in Nov,2004 and in Dec-2023

Visit in November, 2004

Priyanka, Sadhana and myself visited Bhimashankar, Lenyandri Ganesha Temple, Ozar Ganesha Temple by my WagonR Car from Thane to Bhimashankar via Lonawala, Mancher Towns and returned via Sangamner, Nashik to Thane. It was a two day’s tour done in nice climate and beautiful nature of Sahyadri range around Bhimashankar.

Bhimashankar Temple is an ancient temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Bhimashankar area is an excellent place to move around, enjoy scenic beauty and a visitor can also have a trekking experience in the Sahyadri range of Hills. Gupta Bhim (Gupta means hidden) is the place of origin of river Bhima which is situated about 3 km from Bhimashankar Temple.

Girijatmaja (“mountain-born”) or (Son of Girija (i.e. Parvati), Lenyadri is one of Ashtavinayaka temples located at Lekhan Hills near Junnar. The Ganesha idol is believed to be svayambhu (self-existent), a naturally occurring stone formation resembling an elephant-face. One has to climb up 307 steps. Out of 18 Buddhist caves on mountain, Girijatmaj Ganpati’s Temple is in the 8th cave known as Ganesh Gufa.

The Vigneshwara Temple of Ozar is one of the Ashtavinayaka Temples. Vigneshwara means “Lord of obstacles” or Vignahar means “Remover of obstacles” and is associated with the legend of Ganesha defeating Vignasura, the demon of obstacles. Chimaji Appa renovated the temple after seizing the Vasai Fort from the Portuguese. The temple was also renovated in 1967 by the Ganesha devotee Appa Shastri Joshi.
